Developed by Kimberlin Education, Mushrooms is an educational program designed to introduce students to the fascinating world of fungi through interactive learning experiences, classroom resources and engaging visual storytelling.
My role involved leading the visual development of the program, from establishing the brand identity and overall creative direction through to the design and production of educational resources. This included logo design, brand guidelines, character design, art direction, interactive learning modules, classroom presentations, teacher guides, worksheets and marketing materials. Working across both print and digital formats, the goal was to create a cohesive and engaging visual experience that could be applied consistently across the entire program.
The result was a comprehensive educational ecosystem that combined illustration, educational design and interactive learning to make complex scientific concepts more accessible, engaging and memorable for students.
Brand Guidelines
I developed a comprehensive visual identity system for the Mushrooms program, including logo design, colour palettes, typography, character frameworks and resource templates. The guidelines were designed to ensure consistency across all program materials while providing a flexible foundation that could be applied across classroom resources, interactive learning modules, marketing materials and digital experiences.
Character Design
To bring the Mushrooms program to life, I created a family of original mushroom characters designed to engage students through storytelling and visual learning. Each character was developed with a distinct personality, role and visual identity, allowing them to connect with different topics, age groups and learning outcomes across the program.
The character system was designed to be highly flexible, supporting a wide range of educational scenarios through alternate costumes, professions and expressions. These characters became the visual foundation of the program, appearing throughout classroom resources, interactive learning modules, presentations and marketing materials to create a consistent and engaging learning experience.
Interactive Classroom presentations
I designed a series of highly interactive classroom presentations that combined animations, activities, multimedia content and visual storytelling to support student learning. Developed as part of the broader Mushrooms program, the modules transformed complex scientific concepts into engaging, curriculum-aligned learning experiences that encouraged exploration, participation and discovery.
Rise Learning Modules
I designed a series of interactive Rise learning modules that combined custom illustrations, animations, multimedia content and interactive activities to support self-paced learning. Developed as part of the broader Mushrooms program, the modules transformed complex scientific concepts into engaging digital experiences while maintaining a consistent visual identity across the wider resource suite.
Classroom Resources
To support classroom delivery, I designed a suite of teacher guides and student worksheets that extended learning beyond the program's digital experiences. Developed within the broader Mushrooms visual identity, these resources combined clear educational structure with engaging layouts, illustrations and visual learning aids to support a range of classroom activities and learning outcomes.
